Do you remain calm when disaster strikes? If so, you could be a perfect candidate for Greater DC Cares’ Emergency Preparedness and Response Program. Whether you’re responding to natural or man-made disasters, being an emergency response volunteer is an exciting and rewarding experience.

Become an emergency response volunteer. Greater DC Cares helps you:
- Connect with organizations that provide training (first aid, CPR, search and rescue, etc.).
- Find ways for you to help when there’s an emergency.
- Learn how to keep yourself and your family safe in an emergency.
Before a disaster: Be prepared. Come to a volunteer orientation session to register as an emergency response volunteer. In addition to learning about all our volunteer opportunities, you will:
- Be able to sign up for our emergency response program.
- Find out about what trainings are available to you through our emergency response partner organizations such as the Red Cross.
- Learn how to become a Volunteer Leader, so you can lead groups of volunteers during an emergency if you choose.
During a disaster: Sign Up, Don’t Show Up! During a disaster, Greater DC Cares’ website switches over to a “virtual” intake system for volunteers. At the website, you can:
- See a quick synopsis of the emergency.
- Sign up to volunteer.
- Sign up to receive daily e-mail throughout the disaster with current information and updates.
- Understand when it’s better to stay away from an emergency. Too many volunteers can actually hamper first responders’ efforts.
Greater DC cars has had occasion to put our emergency response program into effect in the last few years. We're proud that the results have made a diffference. Learn how Greate DC Cares helped during the 9/11 crisis* and in the aftermath of Katrina.
