How a new nonprofit grew through Greater DC Cares’  Pro-Bono consulting program!

Interstages Inc. is an after-school program that provides low-income, middle-school girls in Washington, DC with lessons in music, history and self-esteem, and also offers one-on-one academic help. Noel Tieszen and Herb Scott, former teachers, founded the organization in 2005.

In its first two years, through Greater DC Cares, Interstages was able to engage:

  • An accountant to set up an accounting system;
  • A grant writer to develop proposals for foundations;
  • A publicist to raise awareness of their work;
  • An event planner to help with logistics;
  • A bookkeeper to help manage their finances on an ongoing basis; and
  • A new board member pre-trained in their roles and responsibilities via our Board Leadership Program.

As a result, Noel and Herb were able to dedicate more time to their students and to raising the money they needed to operate and grow:  “Greater DC Cares has been a real asset in helping us learn the ins and outs of managing a young nonprofit efficiently.  [You’ve] been a great resource in helping us make our dollars go further,"

(Learn more about Interstages and their use of pro-bono consultants in a Washington Times article published in October 2006.)
