Greater DC Cares’ Community Tool Chest makes it possible for nonprofit organizations like yours to borrow a wide variety of tools to use in upgrading and beautifying your facilities.

How it works. Your organization can check out tools from our “tool lending library.” We’ve got supplies for every project! Nonprofits can choose from rakes, wheelbarrows, hammers, paint supplies, gardening supplies, construction tools — even pitchforks and hard hats!

In addition, Greater DC Cares uses the tools regularly for our own projects. For example, we use them to help nonprofits during Servathon, our annual marathon days of service in May, and our Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday of Service events.

Benefits. This service can save your organization hundreds of dollars each year. You could expect to pay more than $100 to buy just one ladder, for example.

Our Community Tool Chest partner — PR Harris Education Center. Located in Southeast DC, PR Harris Education Center has partnered with Greater DC Cares in many ways. One significant in-kind donation PR Harris provides is space for our Community Tool Chest.

The school’s donation of this secure, climate-controlled storage space has enabled Greater DC Cares to continue providing this important service for nonprofits in our region. Thank you PR Harris!

Home Depot organizes the Tool Chest space. In September 2006, Home Depot donated the services of its employees to work on the Community Tool Chest space. The employees built out the space like — a Home Depot! They arranged for shelving materials to be donated, built the shelves and reorganized the tools so that nonprofits could easily find and check out the tools they need. Thank you, Home Depot!

Become a partner! To borrow tools, your organization must be a Greater DC Cares nonprofit partner. Sign up NOW for an orientation to get the process started!
