The volunteer opportunities listed below come to us through area nonprofits with which we are familiar; however, they are not Greater DC Cares’ projects. Greater DC Cares assumes no responsibility for these events. You do not need to be an oriented Greater DC Cares to participate in these projects.
Adoption Coordinators and Assistants: Fancy Cats Rescue Team (FCRT) holds adoptions on weekends at several PetsMart stores and we need a variety of volunteers to help them run smoothly. Adoption Assistants help set-up /clean up at fairs, keep an eye on cats and answer questions. They also talk with potential adopters, do some pre-screening and educating on our adoption conditions. Experienced Assistants are strongly encouraged to become trained as a Coordinator. Adoption Coordinators are authorized by Fancy Cats to release cats to their new families. They approve/deny applications, work with potential adopters to help find the right cat for their situation, answer questions, and sign all Fancy Cats paperwork. Our Adoption Schedule is as follows: Foster Homes Cat Care at Adoption Centers Fancy Cats Rescue Team (FCRT) needs volunteers to care for cats at the Fair Lakes, Springfield, Gainesville, and Chantilly, PetsMart Adoption Centers, especially during morning shifts, and in foster homes that are caring for many of our rescued cats. Care includes: cleaning cages, providing fresh food and water as needed and, most importantly, some much needed love and attention! Our Adoption Schedule is as follows: Youth Volunteers Guiding Eyes for the Blind is a nonprofit organization that provides well trained dogs to the visually impaired. Our puppy raisers open their hearts and homes to future guide dogs to socialize and prepare them for special guide dog training. Safe Shores - The DC Children’s Advocacy Center is provides a coordinated and child-friendly approach to the investigation and prosecution of civil and criminal child abuse cases in the District of Columbia. The DCCAC facility is designed to provide a warm and welcoming place where children and adolescents can feel safe and supported while waiting for and under-going forensic interviews, therapy, court appearances, or placement resolutions. The Center’s staff ensures that children receive supervision, meals, clean clothes, crisis intervention and other emergency victim services during the joint investigative process. Kids Enjoy Exercise Now (KEEN) is looking for new volunteers to team with veteran volunteers as program coordinators for several of its programs. KEEN provides recreational opportunities for children and young adults with disabilities by pairing them with trained volunteers for fun, noncompetitive activities. All general sports programs sports are held on Sundays in Maryland typically twice a month. The program coordinators are responsible for supervising activities during a session, helping new volunteer coaches work with their athletes, and helping set up and store equipment before and after a session. Other members of the coaches committee help the program coordinators with these tasks at the sessions. Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry is looking for caring and loving volunteers to mentor children, age 6-12, that are affected/infected by HIV/AIDS. Mentors are asked to make a year long commitment, and will visit with their mentees twice a month. Activities include but are not limited to museum visits, movies, and picnics. The Mautner Project for Lesbians with Cancer, which improves the health of lesbians and their families, seeks a daytime drive to assist clients to and from their hospital appointments. The driver would pick up the client from their house and transport to Georgetown Hospital at 9:30am for a 10am appointment. Drivers are also needed to pick up clients from the Hospital and transport back to house at usually 1pm. Usually the process takes no longer than an hour and a driver’s license is required. The Pulmonary and Vascular Medicine Branch is providing clinical outreach to the community served by the Upper Cardozo Health Center in Northwest Washington by screening patients with an interest in participating in one of our pulmonary protocols. Sixty percent of the clients served by the clinic are Spanish-speaking. The Volunteer Team Leaders would work one shift on Saturdays, either 9am to noon or 1pm to 4pm. The team leaders would help the volunteer staff manage the large number of volunteers who come to help out at the food bank on Saturdays. We ask that the team leaders attend a comprehensive training about the different volunteer projects, they arrive 15 minutes before the shift to meet with the volunteer staff and that they make a long term commitment, such as six months to a year. Readers and Friendly Visitors are adult volunteers who are matched one-on-one with blind or visually impaired adults and senior citizens. Volunteers arrange weekly meetings with clients at their homes or another mutually convenient location to assist with daily activities, such as reading mail, grocery shopping or running errands. Lighthouse Camp Counselors are student volunteers who are matched one-on-one with blind or visually impaired children during Camp Lighthouse Summer Programs. Student volunteers assist campers with a variety of recreational and sports activities, including arts and crafts, computer labs, swimming and field trips. Student volunteers must have completed at least one year of high school, be 16 years of age and are required to attend a full-day camp orientation and training session. Adult and student volunteers are needed throughout the year to assist with special events. CLB also offers opportunities for community groups to sponsor special events that benefit children who are blind or visually impaired. Sometimes there is nothing more powerful than a friendly voice on the other end of the phone line. Become a volunteer literacy tutor and teach an adult to read, write, or speak English. No foreign language skills are necessary. Volunteer Tutor Contacts Wanted The Literacy Council of Montgomery County, MD is seeking volunteers to spend 2-3 hours at the end of each month contacting 8-15 tutors. Tutor contacts (1) collect monthly activity reports from each volunteer tutor and (2) offer a lifeline between the tutors and the LCMC program office. Tutors are dispersed throughout the entire county and many have little or no direct contact with the organization or office staff. Tutor contacts identify issues or concerns tutors may have and refer them to the appropriate individual within the LCMC. Tutor contacts collect data at the end of each month from the tutors via telephone or email, complete progress reports and forward them to the Literacy Council via mail or email. This work may be done at the volunteer's convenience. The only requirement is that tutor contacts submit their completed information on or before the 5th of the month. CentroNía's tutoring program has served over 500 children and has helped children move from below average in reading to meeting or exceeding their grade level requirements. Students from 20 DCPS, and local area Charter Schools in grades K through 12 receive one-on-one tutoring, using a highly structured reading and math curriculum at a pace comfortable and appropriate for that student. Did you know that in 2007, 75 percent of all District of Columbia Public Schools DCPS and public charter school students were below their grade level in reading and math? Our goal is to raise the reading and math scores of our students so that they perform at or above grade level. With your help, our organization seeks to provide the children in our program with the tools and motivation necessary to achieve and escape the cycle of unemployment and poverty that has afflicted so many in their parents’ generation. Friends of Choice in Urban Schools (FOCUS) StreetWise Partners DC is recruiting volunteer mentors for its spring 2008 cycle beginning in early February. The 13 week program will match two volunteer mentors with a low-income client. Arlington Refugee Services has several volunteer needs: English Tutor – Meets one-on-one with refugees to work on basic language skills or conversation practice. Materials are provided and creativity is highly encouraged. Tutors meet with client in client’s home or a neutral location such as a local library. Sessions should be once or twice a week for approximately 1-2 hours each time. Volunteers must attend initial orientation training and are encouraged to attend social events with their students. Activity Buddy – Meets one-on-one with refugees to help orient them to the area. This can involve anything from visits to the farmer’s market, trips to the Smithsonian museums, or casual dinners out. These volunteers help refugees learn about the public transportation system and acclimate to life in the city. Resume Helpers – Meet with clients once a week for about an hour to interview them about their experience and help them create a resume. Be part of a rotating schedule of volunteers or pick one day a week to work with clients in our office. Orientation – Needed to assist newly arrived families with public transportation, appointments, banking, survival English, etc. Should be able to commit at least 3 hours a week and be willing/able to provide transportation with a car. Transportation – Helps clients get around town, especially in the first weeks after their arrivals. May also be needed to help move furniture on occasion. These volunteers are often needed in the afternoons and on weekends. Youth Mentor – Meets with 1-3 young refugees to practice English through social activities and events. Volunteers must attend initial orientation training. Mentors should meet with clients at least 3 times a month, more if possible to do fun activities that encourage socialization and introduce youth to American culture in a positive, non-threatening way. Creativity is encouraged. Monthly social events with all mentors and teens are facilitated. Special Events Helpers – Volunteers needed to help with monthly special events. Drivers, event researchers and helpers needed to help with taking clients on special outings as well as planning and looking for donations for special projects. Examples include: Ice skating day, Art projects, baseball tickets, etc. CHIME (Community Help in Music Education), works tomobilize community resources to promote, provide, and build connections through music education for all District of Columbia public schoolchildren during and outside of school. CHIME is currently looking for volunteer assistance in the following areas: 1. CPA for 990 and audit 2. Graphic designer for marketing materials and help with website content design. It would be good to have a volunteer who could do short projects as needed. In November we would like help with designing a funding appeal, and with website.
